Trendsetter Q&A with David Hauslaib

1. Carrie definitely has trendsetter style. What can women/celebs do now to stand out and become a fashion leader?

Most celebs try too hard to become a fashion leader -- and end up lambasted on the blog Fuggin' It Up. To stand out these days, you shouldn't look like you raided the closets of a certain set of multimillionaire twins. Surely the fashion press will commend you for that alone.

2. Sex and the City episodes always featured the hippest spots around the city? What's the latest place to be and be seen?

The trendiest spots around town are mostly manufactured by publicity firms and celebrity wranglers who get the stars past the velvet rope so they can be spotted by Page Six. In Manhattan, the latest spots trying to make a go at becoming the next Marquee are Pre:Post, the revamped (and relocated) Pink Elephant, Nest, and Boudoir. Across town, there's Element and Freeman's on the Lower East Side, should you need an escape from $16 martinis.

3. There was the Tae Bo craze and then the yoga obsession. What's the "in" way to stay fit now?

Treadmill classes are the latest rage, since they take a piece of regular gym equipment and throw in the energy level of an aerobics workout. Just be sure to pause the treadmill track before you try to do pushups in between sprints. That, and avoid the stuffed stuffed crab and garlic risotto at book parties and you won't have to worry where those "flaps" on your triceps came from.

4. Real tan or spray on?

Spray on, if only to save your skin from looking like you spent the entire year on your yacht off the coast of Mykonos, instead of just the summer. But nothing feels better than 15 minutes inside a warm cocoon of UV light.

5. Where's the best place to go in Manhattan for celebrity sightings?

The West Village has always been good to me for celeb spottings, and under-the-radar locals on the Lower East Side can usually offer up at least a Hartnett or a Farrell run-in. Though with Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams setting up shop in Brooklyn, the "other borough" is claiming developing its own rep as a celeb zoo.
